Cast Iron Geezer.
Does the title mean I’ve used cast iron? Or is the title an adjective? Well, I’ve got a new frying pan. And it’s made of cast iron. And I’m already surprised how easy it is to use.
We have been using pans from the supermarket, and they have usually lasted a year. Recently we started to worry more about the coatings on pans. Some metals and coatings leech into the food. And this cannot be good for you.
For similar reasons, we’ve stopped using highly processed seed oils of any kind. The only oils you will find in our kitchen are olive oil and avocado oil. We use tallow and butter to fry. With tallow, the house smells like a 1930s fish and chip shop, but the taste and benefits are worth it.
Now we are eating a lot of meat because our diets. Sometimes we just eat meat, fish or eggs. So, the frying pan is being used a lot in our house.
I ordered a pre-seasoned pan, washed it gently, dried it out in the oven and applied to thin layers of avocado oil. I expected the food to stick but it didn’t. I expected it to be difficult to clean. It was not. I got the excess food off the pan with just water.
Hopefully for under £30, this will be a good buy. And I guess if it wears out in a year or two, I’ve lost nothing.
